Enrolments

Year 7

Normanhurst Boys High School is an academically selective school and consequently its enrolment policy is largely determined by the Selective Schools Unit of the Department of Education and Training. In particular entry of all students into Year 7 is managed by the Selective Schools Unit (SSU).

Two equivalent Information Mornings will be held to assist current Year 5 students and their parents in making decisions about high school options.

The Information Mornings will be held on: Thursday, October 1 and Monday, October 19, starting at 9.30am with speakers in the school hall and concluding at about 11am with a conducted tour of the school.

Offers and placement on the reserve lists are made on a hierarchical basis using the results of the Selective Schools Examination and input from a selection committee. The committee consists of an officer from the SSU, the School Education Area Director (or nominee), the Principal and a parent representative. The committee reviews areas such as illness/misadventure, NESB, ATSI, overseas applications and other information relevant to a student’s application and makes a determination as to where placement on the list is to occur.

There is a ceiling of 120 students entering Year 7. Vacancies, which may subsequently occur, are filled by the SSU up until the commencement of Term 3. Vacancies that occur after this time are filled at the school’s discretion. If filled by the school, the reserve list continues to be used as the basis for enrolment.

Applicants will be required to sit for the Selective High School Placement Test on Thursday 19 March 2009. They will be advised of the outcome in July 2009.

An enrolment package will be sent to successful applicants during November, in preparation for the Orientation Day in early December.

All enquiries about Year 7 entry should be directed to the Selective Schools Unit of the Department of Education and Training, on (02) 9707 6262 or by email at ssu@det.nsw.edu.au.

Years 8 – 12

Entry into Years 8 – 12 is at the discretion of the school and will depend upon vacancies that may arise. Students who wish to gain entry to the school for Years 8 - 11 will be required to sit an entry test in literacy and numeracy as well as provide documentation to accompany their application. The documentation should be restricted to the past three years only and could include some or all of the following:

  • Results in national and state wide competitions
  • Merit Awards or certificates from the current school
  • Details of sporting and/or cultural achievements
  • Other documentation to support the application
  • Copies of the applicant’s current school reports, specifically this year’s half-yearly report MUST be included in the application.

Please do not provide any originals of the above documents.

An administration fee of $40 needs to accompany each application for Years 8 - 11. Any applications for entry to Year 12 will be considered on their merit but applicants will not be required to sit an entry test.

The entry tests will be conducted on Saturday, August 15, 2009, at the school. There will be two 45 minute tests with a 15 minute break between them. The first test will commence at 10.00am and applicants will need to arrive at the school by 9.45am.

A selection committee, consisting of the Principal (or his nominee), a staff representative and a representative from the Parents & Citizens Association will consider each application. An interview at the school may be required before a final offer is made.

Students must be Australian citizens or holders of a visa granting permanent residence in Australia and parents/caregivers must be living in NSW by the beginning of the following school year. Successful applicants will be required to show original proof of residence before enrolment. A copy must be attached to the application form.
